My first month at PJR

I’m Florian, the (now not so) new volunteer at the PJR Dresden. I’m from Heidenau, so it’s not too far to the office. I’d also spent a lot of time in Dresden before, so the state capital was a natural fit. I ultimately chose the PJR because the work here offers me an exciting and varied mix: daily engagement with political and social issues, media work, “social” work in schools – and also the classic “bureaucratic” work, with emails and everything that goes with it. And that’s exactly why I’m doing an FSJ: to gain comprehensive insight into many different fields of activity and to be able to make a well-considered choice of studies.

Since my FSJ began almost a month and a half ago, I’ve gained a good overview of what defines the PJR as an organization. I’ve already visited a few schools, initially more as an observer, but I’ve been able to get more and more involved myself. I’ve also attended various continuing education courses and generally traveled a lot in Dresden. But I quickly felt at home in the office, too, and in our small team, there wasn’t much time spent learning names. ;ㅤ) What I also really like about the PJR is that I’m not the only volunteer here. Besides me, Eliseo from Italy is working here for the next 11 months as part of his ESK, which naturally enriches everyday life in the office even more.

I’ve also met many young people at the two educational days I’ve had in Dresden and Leipzig who think like me. I’m looking forward to the educational weeks with them and perhaps one or two more friendships after this year.

So far, everything looks like my volunteer service will fully meet my expectations and give me exactly what I hoped it would. I’m glad I made this decision and look forward to the next 11 exciting, educational, and fun months.
